about

Ejection. That is the best way to approach this landmark work by KIAT and Theseus Chan. Hit ‘eject’ from the noise around you, from the talk, from the feeds, from anything that shackles you to the now and enter the bewitching world of The Greatest Hits.

First friends, now collaborators, KIAT and his former boss, Chan, present a seven-song experience with an un-ironic christening. The Greatest Hits are the greatest hits: Seven distinct views of what it means to build worlds of intimate splendour, worlds teeming with hushed revelations, worlds where the power of sound is harnessed and amplified for its nuances rather its volume. Sometimes, especially in this age of acceleration, where your online and IRL feeds are clogged with a surplus of data, volume is a highly overrated proposition. In this hyperactive present, the greatest hits are the ones that sing to you movingly, meaningfully and monumentally – without shouting, without fussing.

“This project was born in COVID-19. As isolation became a fact of everyday life, I began to appreciate what was truly important to me”, KIAT explains. After Chan responded to sound of his MixCloud tapes that he had released, the two decided that it was only fitting that they made music together. Chan, was, after all, KIAT’s first boss and, in his words, also gave him a “musical education” that expanded his range. “He made it possible for me to explore my own creativity” – the origins of The Greatest Hits date back to a relationship that is formative and foundational.

Genre is not a concern here – because this music is an ode to breaking free of limiting forces. Where genre serves as an assignation, a prison of possibility, the pulse of the beats here is fundamentally regenerative. Hip-hop, jazz, prog, house, blues, soul, techno, breakbeat – different names for different roads taken to arrive at a shared destination: That sound has a power that, when most potent, defies control.
